Bajo mis pies

Acrylic and collage on paper 37 x 48cm

This is my first attempt at using acrylic paints with collage. The subject of the painting is Loja – in the province of Granada, Spain – where I am currently living. The key is the town’s symbol and also reflects my own search for the key to my future.
Both the text and the symbolism in the painting make reference to Washington Irving’s comments about Loja and also to the Arab name for Loja ‘Ibn-Al’Jatib’ and the way that the Arab history of the town is literally ‘bajo nuestros pies’ (under our feet).
The acrylics required a whole different way of working due to the speed that the paint dries. My inner tortoise learned to be a hare!
